Seven Deadly Sins
Several artists explored an emblem series based on the seven deadly (or cardinal) sins, which was an important component of early Chritsian teachings. These are lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride. The Catholic Church devised a doctrine of venial sins, which are relatively minor and could be expunged through the sacraments of the church, and the more severe mortal sins, which peentrated so deeply into the human souls that they would lead to eternal damnation unless absolved through the sacrament of confession, or forgiven through total contrition. The Catholic Church paralleled with these the Seven Virtues.
Below are the engravings of these seven sins by Jan Brueghel, which were prodcuced by Hieronymous Cock in 1558. Prints available.
