The Children of the Planets   Planetenkinder

This was an interesting astrological/astronomical emblematic device which seems to have emerged in the 15th century. It consisted of a series of seven images, one for each planet. In the heavens at the top centre of the each emblem was depicted a chariot in which was seated the god of the planet. The wheels often bore images of the two zodiacal signs associated with the planet, and the chariots were drawn by animals or birds especially symbolic of the planet. On the earth below was depicted various human figures displaying the influences of the planets on human affairs. Thus Mercury would show the craft of mankind, Venus the amorous aspect, Mars the warlike, and so on.
